The Afshan Azad Page provides information on the young British actress who plays Padma Patil in the new Harry Potter film. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the first film Afshan Azad has starred in.

Afshan Azad

Afshan Azad will be making her film debut in the forthcoming 4th Harry Potter film. In the Goblet of Fire she portrays the character of Padma Patil, twin sister of Parvati Patil who is played by Shefali Chowdhury. Casting director Shaheen Baig spent time visiting schools in the Bradford area searching for the perfect pair of Asian girls to play the characters Parvati and Padma. Miss Baig - who has worked on several other big-name films - said at the time: "It's early days yet but you always have to start the kids early because it's such a lengthy process. I've met some really great girls in Bradford through the schools and the open audition so I hope that a fair amount of them get recalled."

The casting process continued on December 21, 2003 at Pineapple Studios, London. Shaheen Baig said, "In this book they are actually written as twins but it has been incredibly difficult to find Asian twin girls so we decided to open it up and just find two girls. We're looking for two girls, if they happen to be sisters that would be amazing, but it doesn't really matter. We just want two good girls who have fantastic chemistry." Eventually Afshan Azad won the role of Padma who has major scenes opposite the film's main stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Afshan Azad's character Padma Patil belongs to the Ravenclaw house at Hogwarts while her identical twin is in Harry Potter's house, Gryffindor. She is also a prefect. Her first name, Padma is Sanskrit for "lotus" while her surname is a Hindi term used in central and southern India to refer to the head of a village. She is asked by her twin Parvati to be Ron's date for the Yule ball because Parvati is going with Ron's best friend Harry. She agrees to it, but the twin's double date with the pair of friends doesn't go too well as both boys seem more interested in other girls at the ball.
