Alastor (Mad Eye) Moody Fan Art

Alastor Moody, called "Mad-Eye" by most people, is a retired Auror or Dark Wizard catcher. He is very badly scarred from a long career of battling the Dark Arts, and also very paranoid. Moody's nickname comes from his magical eye, a replacement for one of his own eyes lost in the line of duty. The magical eye is large, vivid blue and can see through solid objects, as well as being able to see the invisible.

Mad-Eye Moody first appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, although it later turned out that the real Alastor Moody was hidden, trapped in his own magical trunk by Bartemius Crouch junior who was impersonating the real Moody by use of a Polyjuice potion.

The Death Eater imposter spent his time in Hogwarts conspiring to get Harry to unwittingly reach Lord Voldemort via a Portkey, so that the Dark Lord could regain his physical body through a horrible Dark ritual. The real Alastor Moody was eventually released, although he was not found in time to stop Voldemort.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Moody is one of the most important members of the Order and is in charge of the detail sent to bring Harry to Grimmauld Place at the start of the book.
