Beaters. The members of a Quidditch team who are responsible for hitting the Bludgers away from their teammates and toward the opposition

Beaters

The position of beater is vital not only to the team's ability to win, but also to their personal safety. Bludgers strike with enough force to break bones, and the beaters are a team's only line of defence. A skilled beater will know a great deal about bludger behaviour and will not only defend their teammates but use the impartial bludgers to distract and even injure the opposing team.

Beaters in the Harry Potter books include several important characters. Fred and George Weasley are the excellent Gryffindor beaters and are an essential part of the Gryffindor dream team until banned from playing by the odious Dolores Umbridge. Crabbe and Goyle join the Slytherin team in the fifth year, after the previous Slytherin gorillas leave school. Ludo Bagman, head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports at the Ministry of Magic was once a star beater for the Wimbourne Wasps.
