Hogwarts Crest. The heraldic coat of arms of Hogwarts

Hogwarts Heraldic Shield

The Hogwarts school crest or heraldic shield is split into four sections, each representing one of the houses founded by the Hogwarts four. Top left is the rearing lion of Gryffindor house on a red background. Top right is the sinuous snake of Slytherin house, on green. Bottom left is Hufflepuff's badger on yellow and bottom right is the raven of Ravenclaw on blue. The school motto beneath the crest is latin, and translates approximately to 'Never tickle a sleeping dragon'. This is similar to the phrase let sleeping dogs lie, with the humourous magical twist which makes the Harry Potter books so special.
