HogwartsHogwarts - The world's premier school of witchcraft and wizardry

Hogwarts Houses. The four houses of Hogwarts, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff & Slytherin.

Hogwarts Houses

When Hogwarts was founded, a disagreement arose between the four founders, Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff as to which students the school would accept. In the words of the Sorting Hat, which was present at the time:

Said Slytherin, 'We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry is purest.'

Said Ravenclaw, 'We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest.'

Said Gryffindor, 'We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name,'

Said Hufflepuff, 'I'll teach the lot,
And treat them just the same.'

In order to resolve the dispute, the school was divided into four houses, one for each founder, and each house took those students the house's founder preferred to teach. The Sorting Hat was created to place all new students into the house which suited them best. Each house took the name of its founder and ever since, the students of Hogwarts have been divided into Slytherins, Ravenclaws, Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs.
