Minerva McGonagall. Professor of Transfiguration and Head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts

Professor Minerva McGonagall

Minerva McGonagall has been teaching at Hogwarts for almost 40 years, although we don't know if all these were in her current capacity as Transfigurations professor, nor how long she has been Head of Gryffindor House. As Head of Gryffindor she is responsible for the behaviour of members of that house, and their punishments for transgression. Fortunately for Harry and by association Ron and Hermione, McGonagall knew Harry's parents and was present when Dumbledore left infant Harry with the Dursleys. She is as on their side as possible while still being fairly strict about rule breaking. As impartial as anyone can be expected to be, Minerva McGonagall has been known to take points from Gryffindor, her own house, when particularly annoyed by rulebreaking.
