Rowena Ravenclaw wanted only the cleverest students to teach, and Ravenclaw house is home to those who place cleverness, wit and knowledge above all other virtues. When the Sorting Hat placed Hermione Granger, it considered putting her in Ravenclaw for her smarts, before deciding on Gryffindor for reasons of its own. It is interesting to note that Harry was almost a Slytherin, and Hermione a Ravenclaw. Was Ron perhaps considered for Hufflepuff? He is after all a very good friend to Harry.

Notable Ravenclaws are Cho Chang, Ravenclaw Seeker and Harry's one time girlfriend, Luna 'Loony' Lovegood whose father edits the Quibbler magazine, and Padma Patil, sister of Gryffindor Parvati Patil, Padma accompanied Ron to the Yule ball
